Apparat Organ Quartet - Pólýfónía (CD)
It's been eight long years since the first self-titled album of Apparat Organ Quartet came out but it really seems like yesterday. The reason is simple; it has stood the test of time, it's still as fresh today as when it came out in 2002, and was hailed by the press and fans alike as a truly original and unique masterpiece. And now, after a long hiatus – only occasionally interrupted by cracking concerts around Europe and here in Iceland – Apparat Organ Quartet delivers a stunning new album, called Pólýfónía.
Pólýfónía includes nine songs, many of which have been brewing for awhile and have have been heard in the concerts of Apparat Organ Quartet. Some of these songs also act as tributes to the great minds that have influenced the life and sound of the band. For example, the German scientist and theorist Alfred Wegener, author of Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane, gets a nod, so does the godfather of the programmable computer, Charles Babbage. The presence of The Ramones, Motorhead, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Buxtehude and the Pólýfónkórinn, can also be felt in difference parts of the album. Most of the singing is done through vocoders, with lyrics either in English, Icelandic, German or Japanese. Some of the songs are accompanied by dances which the band has choreographed in their own special way and these will be introduced later.
It is well known that the members of Apparat Organ Quartet are enthusiastic collectors of old organs, synthesisers and in general, technology of the bygone age. Some of this equipment is large and heavy and has to be handled with care; as a result the band has taken great interest in the freight and transportation methods of today.
